School improvement initiatives are impacted by cultural characteristics of the school, the distribution of leadership, and students. A positive school culture which encompasses the values and practice in the school promotes change by engaging all the stakeholders. Scattered leadership, which reduces centralized decision making, improves on school performance by involving members of staff and students in decision making. Student involvement in decision-making makes changes more pertinent and effective because it connects decision-making to students’ needs. These interrelated factors provide a cohesive model for school improvement, but difficulties such as resistance to change and feedback provision must be handled in order to optimize results.
