PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND AI & ESG LITERACY AMONG CORPORATE MANAGERS: IMPLICATIONS FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNANCE COMPETENCE

As artificial intelligence (AI) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations become central to corporate decision-making, managers’ capacity to govern both responsibly increasingly depends on the professional training they receive. This article examines the core pathway Quality of Professional Training → AI & ESG Literacy → Responsible Governance Competence among corporate managers. Drawing on recent literature (2019–2025) on AI board competence, responsible AI–ESG integration, and ESG disclosure regulation, the article reports an illustrative survey-based analysis (N = 318 managers) testing whether AI & ESG literacy mediates the relationship between training quality and managers’ governance competence—operationalized as their capacity to formulate AI governance policies and balance innovation, employee rights, and corporate responsibility. Results show that training quality was strongly associated with AI & ESG literacy, which in turn was strongly associated with governance competence, and that literacy mediated approximately 61% of training quality’s total effect on governance competence. The findings suggest that generic compliance training is insufficient; organizations seeking responsible AI governance must invest in structured, literacy-building professional development that spans algorithmic risk awareness, ESG disclosure knowledge, and applied policy-formulation skills.
