The integration of cultural competence into language education is essential for preparing TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) undergraduates to navigate the globalized world. This study evaluates the role of literature-based teaching methods in promoting cultural competence among TESL undergraduates in Henan Province, China. Using a comparative analysis, this research contrasts the effectiveness of literature-based methods with traditional teaching approaches in enhancing students’ understanding of diverse cultures. Data were collected from TESL students exposed to both teaching methods. The results indicate that literature-based methods significantly contribute to students’ cultural awareness and intercultural understanding, surpassing traditional methods in fostering cultural competence. The study concludes with recommendations for incorporating literature more comprehensively in TESL curricula to develop cultural competence among future educators.
